Why do I, Judine Slaughter, PhD, choose alternate publishing instead of pursuing a traditional publisher?
The reasons are four-fold:
One: I don’t want to spend a lot of money.
I'm always looking for the cheapest way to publish – one in which I can pay for goods or services in small increments instead of one lump sum payment. Alternate publishing affords me this opportunity.
Two: I call the shots.
For marketing my products, I have written book reviews, and I call the shots on how I want to write them. There are essential book review criteria, but for the most part, I have used my creativity to write whatever I have in mind.
Three: I am a fourth-generation entrepreneur.
My parents raised me to know I can be or do anything I set my mind to do. My thoughts about myself were the only obstacles in my path. After applying alternate publishing to several books, I am convinced publishing is only as hard as you think.
Four: I like being in charge.
As a publisher, I manage my time, resources, and temper. I set up a system for spending time with the family, budgeting my paycheck to pay the bills I already accumulated, and learning to manage my email etiquette.

Instruction & Publishing Consulting
Our unique value proposition: Offering BIPOC and LGBTQ writers the "Write to Publish" course, available through the Thinkific mobile app, which gives freedom of expression and helps navigate the challenges of ensuring authenticity in their storytelling. This approach enables our clients to learn on the go while acquiring valuable insights into the publishing process.
Benefits of our packages:
- Blended learning: Mix of text, pre-recorded, and live sessions offered for both self-paced content and real-time feedback.
- Student engagement: Automated quizzes and assessments track progress and reinforce learning.
- Remote flexibility: Learn in the US and globally, while traveling, a staycation, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Publishing can be lengthy, and publishing the first draft gives the author a vision of the finished product. No matter what road you decide to take, you are a success. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
